Businesses in Hvidovre are mainly within modern production, crafts, wholesaling, and creative film and media. Within production the main business segments are foods, med tech, biotech, energy, and creative industries within film and media.

The municipality's largest employer is Hvidovre Hospital, one of Denmark's most modern hospitals with 40,000 patients per year. Hvidovre Hospital is a university hospital and a front-runner in research within a number of fields a few of these are: molecular biological and immunological basic research, and research within; anaesthesia, apoplexy, HIV/aids, geriatry, nuclear medicine, virus and vaccines.
